Despite the name, this species builds no tent. Look for a row of white keyhole-shaped spots running down a blue-gray back, with orange-brown stripes along the sides. About 2 inches long at maturity. Active in spring across eastern Washington, particularly in aspen and cottonwood groves during outbreak years. Common enough in peak years to cover sidewalks and walls. Safe to handle.

4. Western Tiger Swallowtail Caterpillar (Papilio rutulus)

Smooth and bright green, with two large orange-and-black eyespots on the thorax that mimic a small snake’s head. When alarmed, it extends an orange forked osmeterium (scent gland) from behind the head. Feeds on cottonwood, willow, and alder statewide from late spring through late summer. The adult is Washington’s state butterfly. Safe to handle, and one of the most striking caterpillars in the state.

5. Monarch Caterpillar (Danaus plexippus)

Bold yellow, black, and white alternating bands circling the body, with a pair of black tentacles at each end. Found only on milkweed plants — if it’s on milkweed, that narrows the ID considerably. Monarch caterpillars absorb cardenolide toxins from milkweed that make them toxic to most predators, but handling poses no risk to people. 6. Cabbage White Caterpillar (Pieris rapae)

Pale green with faint yellow dots along the sides and a narrow yellow stripe down the back. About 1.25 inches long at maturity. The green worm most Washington gardeners find on broccoli, kale, cabbage, and other brassicas. Produces multiple generations per year from April through October. Safe to handle; the pest problem is strictly with your vegetable crop.

Stinging Caterpillars in Washington

7. Io Moth Caterpillar (Automeris io)

Lime green with a white stripe outlined in reddish-brown along each side, and clusters of branching green spines covering the body. The spines are the same color as the caterpillar, which makes them easy to miss against leaf surfaces. Contact with the spines causes immediate burning pain and hives that can last several hours.

The Io moth reaches its northwestern range limit in eastern Washington, where it feeds on willows, cherries, black locust, and other deciduous trees from July through September. Young Io moth caterpillars are bright orange and cluster in groups on leaves; by their last instar they shift to the lime-green form. 8. Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth Caterpillar (Orgyia pseudotsugata)

A native Pacific Northwest species and one of the more distinctive caterpillars in Washington: four dense tufts of whitish-gray hairs along the back, reddish-orange head tufts, and two long black “pencil” hair bundles fore and aft. Those tufts are made of urticating hairs that break off and embed in skin, causing rash, itching, and sometimes allergic reactions in sensitive people. The reaction can be significant enough to require medical attention in people with respiratory allergies.

Found mainly east of the Cascades in Douglas-fir, true fir, and spruce forests, where outbreak populations can defoliate large patches of forest. Even dead caterpillars and shed pupal cases can cause irritation. Don’t handle this species, and avoid rubbing your eyes after working in areas with a heavy outbreak. The body hairs are weakly urticating and cause skin rash or irritation in some people, particularly during outbreak years when large numbers of caterpillars are moving.
