Io Moth Caterpillar

What to Do If a Caterpillar Stings You

The venom mechanism for most stinging caterpillars is the same: hollow spines break off in the skin and release an irritant compound. Treatment is consistent across species.

  1. Don’t rub the area. Rubbing pushes broken spines deeper into the skin.
  2. Apply tape. Press adhesive tape firmly over the sting site and peel it off cleanly. Repeat 3 or 4 times with fresh tape to pull embedded setae out.
  3. Apply ice. Cold reduces swelling and numbs the burn. Keep it on 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Take an oral antihistamine if you develop widespread hives or itching beyond the sting site.
